process of visual perception system. Flashcards

1
Q

what is visual perception?

A

visual perception is a biological and psychological process.
- some elements of visual perception are the same but what we see/think differs between individuals

Q

what is reception?

A

the sensory information is received.
- process of detecting and responding to incoming sensory information.
- rods + cones detect/respond to light.

Q

what is transduction?

A

the information is converted into a neural impulse.
- process of which the receptors change the energy of the detected sensory info into a form that can travel along the neurons to the bran as action potentials (electrical impulses)
- if there wasn’t this stage the sensory info would not travel past the receptors.

Q

what is transmission?

A

the information is sent to the brain for perceptual processing.
- process of sending the sensory info to relevant areas of the brain via the thalamus, primary visual cortex where info is interpreted.

Q

what is selection?

A

certain sensory stimuli or their features are attended, the other features are ignored.

Q

what is organisation?

A

the selected features of sensory stimuli are regrouped so that they are cohesively arranged.

Q

what is interpretation?

A

the now organised sensory information is understood in a way that depends on the meaning that is assigned to it.
- process where incoming sensory info is given meaning so that it can be understood.
- bringing together this info with existing knowledge to make sense of sensory input.
- includes info we have learnt/stored in our memories, current motivations, emotional states and the situation the perpetual experience is taking place.

Q

what is the individual still not consciously aware of the sensory stimuli?

A

after transmission (label), but it would be throughout the process.
