What is Clinical Psychology? Flashcards
What is clinical psychology? What is it based on? What are the two pillars?
Gathering info + intervening, assessment and intervention strategies to deal with social, emotional, developmental and behavioral problems.
Empirically based.
The two pillars are ethics and science.
Evidence based practice. Hierarchy of evidence.
Not just science, info about patient and professional experience.
Synthesis of info drawn from research.
Best to use info at top of pyramid (hierarchy of evidence) which is high internal and external validity.
Critiques of EBP research
Doesn’t tell us much about outliers, have to wait for evidence, lots of unique individuals.
Should EBP always consider the patient’s preferences?
No, sometimes their preferences are not therapeutic. If you have a spider phobia, seeing a spider does not make you feel any better.
