DEFINITION: MENTAL WELL-BEING
A
- A state of well-being
- Every individual realizes his/her own potential
- A positive state of psychological and emotional health
- Able to function cognitively and emotionally

DEFINITION: MENTAL HEALTH
A
- An umbrella term that encompasses a range of mental health states
- A person’s state of mental health fluctuates over time (in response to many factors:
= physical health
= life events
= Environmental conditions that can > protective or risk factors

- Mental health problems

A
- An individual is able to function at a satisfactory level of EMOTIONAL and BEHAVIOURAL adjustment
- Psychological well-being
- The ability to cope with normal stresses
- The ability to form positive relationships
- The ability to manage feelings and emotions
- Experience few sleep difficulties
- Will be physically and socially active

A
- The disruption to an individual’s usual level of social and emotional well-being
- Experience mild - moderate stress
- Temporary impairment
- Difficulty to cope
- Experience some changes in sleep patterns
- Changes in appetite
- Experience a loss of energy
- Difficulty concentrating

MENTAL HEALTH CONTINUUM: Mental health disorder (illnesses)
- Difference between MH and MI (disorder)
= everyone has some level of MH all of the time
= It is possible to be without a MI (disorder)

- Which is the emotional difficulty unties that lead to emotional or behavioural impairment
- Existence of a cynically recognizable set of symptoms and behaviours
- Psychological dysfunction
- Ongoing impairment (significant/severe impairment)
- Excessive anxiety

- Diagnosed with anxiety
- medication and relaxation strategies are effective
- Feel like you are able to cope with smaller stressors most of the time
OMH + NMI
- Not been diagnosed with a mental illness
- You are able to cope with everyday stressors
- Often resilient in the face of adversity
PMH + SMI
- Diagnosed with anxiety
- Cannot find a strategy that alleviates / control the anxiety
- Difficult to cope with everyday stressors (i.e. forgetting your homework)
PMH + NMI
- Not been diagnosed with a mental illness
- Not have all the symptoms present for classification
- NOT coping well with the stressors in your life / daily problems

OMH + SMI = A person can have optimal mental health with a serious mental illness
OMH + NMI = A person can have optimal mental health with no symptoms of a mental illness
PMH + SMI = A person can have poor mental health with a serious mental illness
PMH + NMI = A person can have poor mental health with no symptoms of a mental illness
