Q

what is the research that supports this

A

Kog and v failed to find characteristics predicted by the family system model in families of an individual with anorexia
there is evidence that in families where someone has an eating disorder
there are a diverse group of relationship, the emotional climate and the family interactions.

Q

what does this suggest

A

This shows that family systems is not a reliable explanation of anorexia
as although some families with an anorexic child will have the same characteristics outline by the theory not all will.
so we cannot generalise

There is inconclusive support from family based therapies

A

Carr has shown that there is evidence for the role of family in the development of anorexia in adolescent as family focuse therapies is effective

Q

what does this suggest

A

it suggests that families do play a role in the development of anorexia but not as the family system model suggest as the intervention put in place doesnt target overprotectiveness or lack of control , emneshment therefore it is innacurate

Q

One weakness is that the family system theory is gender biased

A

Gremillion clains that there is a gender bias in family system theory because this approach focuses on exclusivel mother and daughter relationship

17
Q

why is this bad

A

it unfairly blames the mother and believes that emneshment and causes of anorexia is a maternal origin even though fathers can be equally over protective if not even more which may lead to emneshment

18
Q

what does this mean for therapies

A

therapies are targeted at the mothers role in the family and the cause of emneshment whereas it might be infact the father that is triggering the anorexia therefore as therapy overlooks this, it may never be effective, thus the theory must be treated with caution
