Holism and reductionsim Flashcards
what is the debate about
wheteher behaviour should be explained through holism or simplest reductionist explanation
what did collective groups of germans believe in the 1920s
declared the whole world is greater than the sum o its parts which lead to the core basis of holism
what is inappropriate
ant attempt to break up behaviour and experience as there can only be understanding if you are analysing behaviour as a whole.
instead of focusing on aspects of person eg genes we investigate the person as a whole
what is reductionism
analyses behaviour by breaking them down into component pRTS
scientific principles, parsimony that all phenomena should be explained using the most basic lowest levels of principles, reductionist is simplest explanations
what is biological reductionism
we are biological organisms and we are made up of physiolocial structures and process . all behaviour are at the same level and is explained by neurophysiology, evolution , neurochemical and genes
what is enviromental reductionism
breaks behaviour into experiementak reinforcement and consequence formming association between stimuli
outside our interactions with our enviroment no underlying physiological influence of behaviour
as far as enviromental reductionist goes it doesnt concern itself with mental cognitive process
what are the levels of reductionism
it begins at the highest level and then progressively looks at component elements
