Q

what did berry suggest

A

ethnocentrism caused by imposed etic western ideas and theories and practices are expected to be universal and are applied to non western cultures giving invalid data. researchers study non western cultures from the outside and try to apply own understanding and world views to other cultures creating bias

Q

eval bias in research methods

A

there is evidence that there is bias in research methods for example smith and bond reviewed research in european textbook of social psychology and found that 6 percent were american 32 europenan and 2 from the rest of the world in addition majority of the studies appear to be under grads.

Q

what do statistics of smith and bond show

A

this shows that there is a strong cultural bias within our samples and academic research need to be adressed. psychologist should be aware of the imbalance in participants and include more non western participants in order to develop a further understanding and to reduce levels of culture biased and to obtain universlity

Q

what did the test world war show

A

that black american had lower iq and test score it perpuetuated black stereotypes and used to deprive them of futher oppurtunities and higher positions this shows consequence of any cultural bias and shows importance of being sensitive in research methods and not to put a certain group at a disadvantage to ensure than there is no discrimination and that results dont provide scientific justification against ethnic vulnerable people

Q

what are researchers claiming about the old vs traditional view of cultural bias

A

researchers are claiming that old ways of assesing cultural bias no longer exist where the indidualist and collectivist culture were once compared thus no longer relevant to today’s society. osaka et al found that 14/15 studies comparing usa and japan found no evidence of a traditional distinction between individualism and collectivism

14
Q

what does osaka’s study show

A

that differences betwen individual and collectivist cultures are no longer prominent anymore and due to modern day global communication and inter communication between cultures it is much easier to share individualistic cultures with the rest of the world thus narrowing the diffeences between individualist and collectivist cultures so previous i/c distinctions are no longer effective nor reflect todays’ societyu

Q

what is haoppening to psychologist worldwide

A

awareness of cultural bias does lead to a positive stride being made within psychology .

17
Q

how are measure being taken

A

measures are already being taken however psychologist travel more than decades ago to internatonal journals, university conferences the reserachers come from different areas and different cultures and countries and exchange info, ideas and researcg this allows them to gain a better understanding of their culture and bias within the work.

18
Q

what does it provide in terms of networking

A

it also provides reserachers to engage in cross cultural studies with reserachers from that culture this helps them study the culture from within which reduces the chance of cultural bias . this greater understanding of psychological behaviour in other cultures will lead to removal of cultural bias in the future
