culture bias Flashcards
what is culture bias
the interpretation of behaviour based on norms and values of ones own culture and applying own cultural standard to other cultures which may lead to misundertanding with research
what is ethnocentrism
type of cultural bias beliefs in superiority of one cultural group over another it also involves normalisation of one culture seeing others as abnormal in research it leads to a view that behaviour which doesn’t conform to norms are seen as deficient or underdeveloped
what did berry suggest
ethnocentrism caused by imposed etic western ideas and theories and practices are expected to be universal and are applied to non western cultures giving invalid data. researchers study non western cultures from the outside and try to apply own understanding and world views to other cultures creating bias
what is the example for ethnocentrism
ainsworth strange situation defined typical american attachment as secure and those of non western cultures as insecure this terminology implies that they have weak attachment s and that they are seen as deficient and under developed thus they dont accoun t for cultural differences
what is cultural relativism
it is the opposite of ethnocentrism it is when all cultures are worth respecr and when we study other cultures we should try and undertsand the way the culture sees the world
what did berry say about relativism
culturally relative theories use an emic approach and studies cultures from within and attempts are made to identify and models the views that apply specifically to those culture
what is an example of relativism
recognizing that certain diagnostic tools such as the dsmv may not be universal to all cultures as they are based on western cultures for example hearing voices is a syptom of schizophrenia however this is a common phenomena in some cultures.
eval bias in research methods
there is evidence that there is bias in research methods for example smith and bond reviewed research in european textbook of social psychology and found that 6 percent were american 32 europenan and 2 from the rest of the world in addition majority of the studies appear to be under grads.
what do statistics of smith and bond show
this shows that there is a strong cultural bias within our samples and academic research need to be adressed. psychologist should be aware of the imbalance in participants and include more non western participants in order to develop a further understanding and to reduce levels of culture biased and to obtain universlity
What is the consequence of cultural bias
Us army IQ test just before world war 1 asked highly cultural bias question which could be easily answered by the causcasians but African americans found it harder to answer
what is a consequence of cultural bias example
us army iq test just before the world war they asked question which were highly cultural bias it was easier for the causcasian to answer but harder for the african american to answer
what did the test world war show
that black american had lower iq and test score it perpuetuated black stereotypes and used to deprive them of futher oppurtunities and higher positions this shows consequence of any cultural bias and shows importance of being sensitive in research methods and not to put a certain group at a disadvantage to ensure than there is no discrimination and that results dont provide scientific justification against ethnic vulnerable people
what are researchers claiming about the old vs traditional view of cultural bias
researchers are claiming that old ways of assesing cultural bias no longer exist where the indidualist and collectivist culture were once compared thus no longer relevant to today’s society. osaka et al found that 14/15 studies comparing usa and japan found no evidence of a traditional distinction between individualism and collectivism
what does osaka’s study show
that differences betwen individual and collectivist cultures are no longer prominent anymore and due to modern day global communication and inter communication between cultures it is much easier to share individualistic cultures with the rest of the world thus narrowing the diffeences between individualist and collectivist cultures so previous i/c distinctions are no longer effective nor reflect todays’ societyu
instead of i/c what must researchers focus on
they must focus on becoming more racially sensitive to their published ideas rather than be concered about idiividualistic and collectivist culture
