what are Christian beliefs about the ressurection? Flashcards
what does the Catholic Church teach to show when Jesus resurrected he retained the same physical body?
- the tomb is empty
- Jesus still has wounds on his risen body
- he shares in communal meals with his disciples
what does the Catholic Church teach about the spiritual side of his ressurection?
Jesus’ body is much more than the physical body: “this authentic, real body possesses the new properties of a glorious body” (CCC 645) - it was heavenly/spiritual
- he can now pass through walls
- to be present with his disciples in such a way that his identity is hidden, until he wishes to reveal who he is
what does the Catechism teach about the 2 key aspects of the Paschal mystery (jesus’ death and resurrection)
- through his atoning death, Jesus frees us from sin
- through his resurrection, he opens the way for us to have eternal life. assured of our own future resurrection.
What does the Catholic Church teach about our own resurrection?
as ‘Easter people’ who will be judged after death and will be given the opportunity to be in the presence of God for all eternity. will be spiritual and physical like Jesus. It will happen on judgement day.
What does Jesus’ ressurection confirm about himself? what is he named?
His divinity is confirmed and seen to be the New Adam, through which all things will be made new, “For as in Adam, all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22)
what did Saint Paul say about Jesus’ resurrection?
he says it has already happened.
“If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain”
this is saying we must believe in Jesus’ ressurection if we have faith.
what does Saint Paul say about our resurrection?
it is going to happen. in his letters tells us of a bodily ressurection + makes distinction between our earthly and heavenly bodies “it is sown in a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body”
Saint Paul: it is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body
This is saying we are both body and spirit. Our soul lives on and will be given a ‘glorious body’ at final judgement. We will ‘bear the image of the heavenly man’ - changed to be
What does the Church teach about survival of the soul?
At the end of time, body will be raised and united with soul and a final judgement will be made, Faithful + those in purgatory will go to heaven, those who turned away from God + committed mortal sins will go to hell
why does the soul not die with the body?
because it was given by God ‘God breathed’ life into us (Genesis) so is essential to component life after death
