Welfare lecture 2 Flashcards
Key elements in learning behavior to horses
- Be consequent
- Praise when right
- Repeating
Associative learning
Animal learn that difference properties of environment, or different stimuli, are associated
Conditioning
A response becomes more frequent or more predictable in a given environment as a result of reinforcement
Thorndike’s law of effect: positive
Positive reinforcers increase probability of behaviour being repeated
Thorndike’s law of effect:
Negative
Negative reinforcement increase probability of response when they are removed.
Why is timing important
Otherwise, the behavior is not linked to the reinforcement and learning will fail –> ideal within 0.5 seconds
Negative reinforcement
The response that results in taking away aversive stimulus gives the horse control
Operant conditionering
Start with behavior that occurs by chance, reward it
