What is euthanasia?
The painless way of killing a patient suffering from sickness or injury
What is humane killing?
A method that ensures an animal is either killed instantly or that involves rendering an animal insensible until death ensues, without pain, suffering, or distress.
What are the key differences between euthanasia and humane killing?
Euthanasia implies killing is for the benefit of the animal (to end suffering), while humane killing is a term that is used to describe the ending of a life (in general), without pain.
Situations in which people kill animals:
- Food - slaughter
- Research/study
- Pests/disease control
- Religion
- Hunting/recreational
- End suffering (aged, sick, injured)
- Unwanted breeding stock
- Behavioural issues
- Culling livestock (due to low production/reproduction
- Financial limitations
What is the criteria for a humane death?
- rapid loss of conscious - no longer feeling/perceiving negative experiences
- minimal negative experiences (pain, breathlessness, fear, anxiety prior to LoC
- consciousness must not be recovered before death occurs
What are some killing methods?
Slaughter, culling, vet clinic, pest control, disease control
