Welfare - L4 Flashcards
What is the purpose of the Five Domains Assessment model?
It is designed to provide a comprehensive framework for evaluating animal welfare by addressing both the negative and positive aspects of an animal’s experience
What is Domain One?
Nutrition and hydration.
Focuses on the availability of food and water, the quality, variety, and intake.
Restrictions to these can impact the physical state of the animal.
Assess using both animal-based and non- animal based indicators to tell us about nutrition status.
What are some examples of animal and non animal indicators of Domain One (nutrition and hydration)?
Animal based - body condition score, feeding behaviour, hydration status
Non- animal - feed composition, water and food supply
What is Domain Two?
Physical Environment.
This focuses on the effects of the environment/conditions of the animal (think in terms of exposure to unavoidable physical conditions). Temp, humidity, noise etc.
What are some examples of animal and non animal indicators of Domain Two (physical environment)
Animal based - behaviour related to environment, health, comfort,
Non-animal based - facility design, temp and humidity control, sanitisation.
What is Domain Three?
Health and functional status.
This is the presence/absence of disease, injury, functional impairment.
Predominantly animal-based indicators.
What is the relationship between domains 1-3?
- reflect on animal’s internal physical/functional state
- restrictions in these domains can lead to welfare compromise
What is Domain Four?
Behaviour and interaction.
Interactions with the environment, other animals, and humans. Focuses on animal-based indicators, as only the animal’s behaviour is being observed.
This domain relates to ‘agency’, which is the ability to have opportunities that are goal related, a sense of control, with choices.
What is agency?
The ability to engage in voluntary, self generated, goal-orientated behaviour. It is linked to the sense of being in control, having choices,
