How do ethical decisions differ from non-ethical decisions?
- They are concerned with actions that can seriously impact the welfare or survival of others
– Ethical standards take priority over other standards
– The soundness of ethical standards depends on the reasons used to justify them
* justifying an ethical decision/action based on “because I could” is not good enough
* justification should be based on broader ethical principles
Why study ethics?
- to provide tools to help us resolve ethical dilemmas - a framework to guide you
- to provide support in the process of reasoning

What does Consequentialist mean?
Acceptability depends on OUTCOME/CONSEQUENCE of action (act itself not good or bad).
What does Non-Consequentialist mean?
Acceptability focuses on NATURE of action or its underlying PRINCIPLE not just the outcome/consequence
