How does orlistat work
A
reduces the absorption of fat in the body from consumed food and is auseful tool to aid weight loss

Who is orlistat used for (4)
A
- Orlistat 60mg (P) is only licensed for adults over the age of 18 who are overweight
- a body mass index (BMI) of 28kg/mor over.
- In order to achieve sustained weight loss, they are required to adopt a reduced calorie, lower-fat diet and an exercise regime before starting treatment with the drug
- The customer must have a consultation with the pharmacist to ensure it is suitable

How is orlistat taken (5)
A
- Orlistat 60mg capsules should be taken three times day immediately before, during or up to one hour after each meal.
- If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose should be skipped as it only works to reduce the absorption of fat from the diet
- The maximum dose is three 60mg capsules per day
- The treatment should not exceed 6 months
- anyone who is not able to lose weight after 12 weeks of treatment will need to be referred to the pharmacist or their GP.

What are the side effects of orlistat (5)
A
- Oily or fatty stools
- Abdominal pain and discomfort
- Problems with teeth/gums
- Rectal pain/discomfort
- Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea
