Lymphadenitis
Enlarged lymph nodes resulting from infection/inflammation
What size should lymph nodes generally be?
about 1cm
Lymphadenopathy
Nodes that are abnormal in size, consistency, or number
Lymphangitis
Inflammation of the lymphatic vessels
Lymphadema
Swelling in tissues due to obstructed lymphatic vessels (often from lymph node removal/injury)’
How would lymphedema be distuinguished from Right-sided CHF edema?
lymphedema will be localized, and can result from radioactive cancer treatments; edema from CHF will be diffuse, and secondary to HF
Where is Virchow’s node found?
Left supraclavicular area; indicative of intra-abdominal malignancy in half of patients
What are the most common causes of hypothyroidism?
Iodine deficiency, Hashimoto’s disease, post-partum thyroiditis and radioactive destruction of gland
What are the most common causes of hyperthyroidism?
Grave’s disease, subacute thyroiditis, and toxic adenomas
In what disease state would a thyroid bruit be most likely to be auscultated?
Hyperthyroidism (notably Grave’s disease)
What may be seen in a typical case of otitis media?
Most likely to present in toddlers; purulent fluid behind TM, bulging of TM, and erythema
