WEEK THIRTEEN: ACHIEVEMENT Flashcards
what is mastery motivation?
from birth, infants are driven to explore, understand, and master their environments.
Ex: an athlete who is motivated by mastery might want to run as fast as they possibly can. Any medals that they receive are less important than the process of continuous improvement
what influences mastery motivation?
their emerging self-concept,
how they approach challenging tasks
How they respond to success and failure
what is mastery orientation?
a belief that success comes from trying hard and that failures are influenced by factors that can be controlled, like effort. Mastery orientation involves adaptation and resiliency
what is learned helplessness orientation?
an orientation characterized by a fixed mindset and the attribution of poor performance to internal factors.
Can perpetuate poor performance
Ex: if a child regularly performs poorly on exams even after studying, they may start to believe that preparing for tests is ineffective and won’t have any impact on their grade.
what is achievement motivation?
the willingness to persist at challenging tasks and meet high standards of accomplishments
what is fixed mindset?
believing that characteristics are enduring and unchangeable
what is growth mindset?
viewing skills and characteristics as malleable or changeable
