what is attachment?
a reciprocal between child and the caregiver
what is secure attachment?
involves healthy communication within partners/relationships which allows them to ask for help. People with secure attachments can self-regulate emotions
what is anxious attachment?
can be portrayed as clingliness therefore have a fear of abandonment. They do require a need for constant reassurance
what is avoidant attachment?
involves difficulties expressing emotions and tends to emotionally withdraw from others. With this habit they tend to be reserved to asking for help when needed
what is disorganized attachment?
(worst one) involves incorporates characteristics of avoidant and anxious attachment. has a fear of rejection but difficulties with intimacy. They tend to have low self esteem
what are basic emotions?
a set of primary emotions that are universally recognized across cultures. Some of the basic emotions are: happiness, interest, surprise, fear, anger, sadness, and disgust
what are self-conscious emotions?
(secondary emotions) emotions that require cognitive development and an awareness of self
Ex: pride, empathy, embarrassment, shame, and guilt
what are emotion regulation?
the baility to adjust and control our emotional state to influence how and when emotions are expressed.
Ex: children become aware of social standards and rules, emotion regulation becomes inportant

what is social referencing?
seeking information from caregivers about how to interpret unfamiliar or ambiguous events by observing their emotional expressions and reactions
what is emotional display rules?
unstated cultural guidelines for acceptable emotions and emotional expressions that are communicated to children through their caregivers emotions, behaviors, and expressions
what are risk factors?
individuals or contextual challenged that tax an individual’s coping capacities and can evoke psychological stress
Ex: divorce, bullying, sexual abuse, low SES, and expose to poverty
what is resilience?
the ability to adapt to serious adversity
Resilient children tend to be:
Friendly
Good self control
Competent
Good information processing and problem solving skills
Sensitive to others
what is protective factor?
variables that are thought to reduce the poor outcomes associated with adverse circumstances
what is temperament?
characteristic differences among individuals in emotional reactivity, self regulation, adn activity that influences reactions to the environment
Appear early in life
Relatively stable in infancy, becomes more consistent in early childhood and is predictive of later behaivours
what is easy temperament?
generally, positive mood, even-tempered, open adaptable
