What was Jourdan’s Law?
Passed in September 1798
Conscription was reintroduced to rebuild the army.
Provoked widespread resistance.
What was the impact of the second Coalition of 1799?
French armies were pushed back into France.
The Directory could no longer be funded by plundering.
The threat of invasion made them unpopular.
What was the Coup of Prairial?
In June 1799.
The directory were getting the blame for the war.
The influence of neo-Jacobins forced the removal of two Directors.
Resulted in a forced loan on the rich.
What were the causes of The Coup of Brumaire?
Director Abbé Sieyès wanted to restore the power of the executive and cut back the influence of the radicals.
He chose napoleon to support him.
Who was appointed as the President of the Council of Five Hundred?
Lucien on 23rd October.
Where were the councils moved before the coup?
9th November 1799- Sieyès moved the councils to Saint Cloud under the pretext of a violent neo-Jacobin plot in Paris.
What happened with the army before the coup?
Troops were also deployed around Paris.
Napoleon took command of the army in Paris and directed 6000 into position at Saint-Cloud.
Who stepped down from the directory?
Sieyes, Barras, Ducos all stepped down as directors, virtually destroying Directory Government.
When did Napoleon storm the council of Ancients and Five Hundred?
10th November 1799
What happened after Napoleon stormed the councils?
The plotters issued a decree abolishing the Directory.
This marked the end of the government of the directory.
What would replace the old structure of Government?
Government would consist of three leaders, called consuls.
