What were the causes of the Rising of 12 Germinal?

A

Economic crisis, huge rates of inflation, and the currency was ruined.
First time since Autumn 1791, bread prices were a social problem.
Police law passed which lay down the death penalty for seditious language.

Assignats were worth 3% of their face value.
This caused the government to be much weaker, it became much harder to administer France.

What were the causes of the Rising of 13 Vendémaire?

A

Started by Chouans, a royalist, Catholic force in the Vendée.
Religious grievances.
Supported by the British who gave them weapons, clothing, food etc.
Poor socio-economic conditions caused by the repeal of the Law of the Maximum, poor harvests and inflation.
Their main aim was to return the monarchy.

A

Bonaparte arrived at Convention, joined Barras’ forces.
5th Oct- Bonaparte helped to override Barras, ordered the collection of cannons.
Republicans eventually won which extinguished the immediate threat to the Convention.
