What role did Napoleon play in the revolution?
In 1791, he joined a Jacobin Club in Valence and, in 1792, the National Guard.
In 1793, he helped to drive the British out of Toulon.
What different titles did Napoleon earn?
He became second-lieutenant of artillery but played no part in the early revolution.
He was promoted to brigadier-general in December 1793.
In February 1794, he was appointed commandant of the artillery in the French Army of Italy.
What enlightenment beliefs did Napoleon hold?
He read Voltaire and Rousseau and believed that political change was imperative.
However, he did not see any need for radical social reforms.
How did Napoleon’s role change after the Terror?
His career was briefly threatened by the fall of Robespierre.
He was seen as a protégé of Robespierre so was charged with conspiracy and treason.
He was freed in September but was not restored to his command.
How did he regain influence after the terror?
After his role in the Vendémiaire rising in October 1795, he was promoted to commander of the Army of the Interior and adviser on military matters.
He was appointed commander-in-chief of the Army of Italy in March 1796.
