Week 9 - Peak Oil, Peak Phosphate & Climate Change and our future food supply Flashcards
What is peak oil?
Peak oil is when we have reached the halfway point in using up the world’s easy oil reserves.
A continuous decline in production
Negatives of peak oil in regards to food supply?
A fall in global oil supplies could cause spiking food prices and unprecedented famine
What is phosphorous?
A rock, present in all cells in all forms of
life because it makes up part of the backbone of
DNA – you can’t make DNA without phosphorus.
Why is phosphorous important
As a fertiliser, is important for the world’s food production.
Impact of climate change on agriculture and food production
- 4 things
Water depletion due to changes in rainfall
Temperature change impacting on – land and ocean, impacting on viticulture, aquaculture, potential increase in disease
Changes to frosts – stone fruit industry
Extreme events – flooding
Solutions of climate change at a local level
- 5 things
don’t eat as much meat (biggest production company) = GHG
reduce food miles (start a home garden)
shop at local farmers marker
eat less processed foods and reduce packaging waste
cook more for several days
What is food sovereignty?
Community taking back control over food and agricultural systems
What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
consist of a system of weekly delivery or pick-up of vegetables and fruit, in a vegetable box scheme
National solutions of climate change
- 3
Land use and planning
Control Food Waste
Incentives to grow local food economies, healthy products
Global Solutions of climate change
Skills and Training
Support farmers and promote farming and agriculture through schools and the tertiary sector to address the growing decline in skilled farmers and food producers
