Week 9 Flashcards
Define Double - labeled water technique (DLW)
Uses isotopes to track the rate of energy expenditure
Advantages of DLW
- Safe
- Minimal imposition on the individual
- Done over 14 days so it is an estimate of typical daily energy expenditure
Disadvantages of DLW
- Expensive
- Does not provide info on brief periods of exercise
- Doesn’t measure type, frequency or intensity of exercise
Define calorimetry
Calorimetry is the process of measuring the amount of heat released or absorbed during a chemical reaction
Advantages of calorimetry
- Accurate, reliable
- Can be used in lab and in normal environment
Disadvantages of calorimetry
- Expensive
- Participant burden
- Short duration of use
Two types of direct observation
- Continuous focal sampling (CFS)
- Momentary time sampling (MTS)
What 4 things to observe during direct observation
- Record FITTD
- Equipment
- Interactors
- Usability of space
advantages of direct observation
- Flexible procedures
- Can be a process measure as well as an outcome measure
Disadvantages of direct observation
- Extensive training required
- Data collection and reduction labor intensive
- Restricted to small studies
What is a sensecam
Wearable camera that auto takes photos from a first person pow
- Takes photos every 30 seconds (alterable)
What triggers a sensecam
Movement
Light
Temp
Define momentary time sampling
Momentary Time Sampling is an interval recording strategy involves observing whether a behavior occurs or does not occur during specified time periods. The observer looks up and records whether a behavior occurs or does not occur at the very end of the interval.
Define continuous focal sampling
Continuous sampling method is another sampling method that is frequently used to observe behavior. When using this method, the observer simply records all of the activity that occurs while
