What is a mental health screening screening
(MSE)?
assessment to evaluate a person’s cognitive, emotional, and psychological state through observation and questioning.
What are 3 clues to poor mental state when
looking at their physical health?
- Obesity
- Poor oral care
- Weight loss
Name 5 perceptual disturbances?
- Hallucinations
- Illusions
- Depersonalisation
- Derealisation

What is the difference between a true and
pseudo hallucination?
- True hallucinations: experienced as originating outside the head (eg. are heard “with the ears”)
- Pseudo-hallucinations: experienced as originating inside the head (eg. seen with the “mind’s eye”)
What does cognitive testing aim to detect?
Aims to detect the presence of an organic brain syndrome.
What are 3 types of time related memories?
Immediate memory: Holds info briefly, affected by distractions.
Short-term memory: Recalls info from minutes to hours, decays in a day.
Long-term memory: Stores info for years, retrieval can be impaired
What are 4 aspects of age-related decline?
Perceptual

Differences between age related memory loss
and dementia?
Normal age-related memory loss
Can function independently, perform normal activities
Able to recall and describe incidents of forgetfulness
May pause to remember directions but doesn’t get lost in familiar places
Dementia
Difficulty performing simple tasks (paying bills, dressing themselves)
Unable to recall or describe when memory loss caused problems
Gets lost in familiar places, cannot follow directions
What are four “D’s” that aren’t dementia?
- Delirium

What are dangers to look for when testing
dementia/decline?
