Week 5 Flashcards
What is a “good posture”?
Good posture is proper body alignment that reduces strain and prevents injury.
Name 4 things that affect postural development?
Bony contours
Facial
Muscle tightness
Mobility
Name 2 main causes of poor posture?
Positional factors and structural factors
Name 2 poor posture positional factors and how are they managed?
- Pain
- Respiratory conditions
- Can be managed through therapeutic exercises and education
name 2 poor posture structural factors and how they are managed?
- Trauma
- Disease
Not easily managed
What are 2 main postural deviations?
lordosis and kyphosis
What is scoliosis and how should you view it?
Lateral deviation in the frontal plane associated with rotation. View from back
what is the difference between vargus and valgus leg postures
Vargus = bowleggedness
Valgus = knock knees
name a simple way to check posture
History
Inspection
Palpation
Special (Functional) Tests
Five reasons poor sitting posture is a problem?
Strain
Balance issues
Affects spine health
Fatigue
joint degeneration
what are the different body types
ectomorph
lowest amount of fat
narrow shoulders and flat chest
long limbs
fast metabolism
mesomorph
low fat level with muscles
medium bones
strong power peformance
developed chest
endomorph
excessive fat
massive limbs
wide hips and waist
slow metabolism
what is lordosis/hyperlordosis
Some lordosis is normal however too much can lead to hyperlordosis, which is excessive inward curve of the spine.
what is kyphosis/hyperkyphosis
Hyperkyphosis is an excessive forward (posterior) curve of the spine.
5 causes of lordosis
Poor posture
Obesity
Muscle imbalances
Spinal conditions
Developmental issues
what is sway back
Sway back is a posture where the hips push forward, causing an exaggerated lower back curve and upper body leaning back. also known as lordosis
