Week 8 - Phonological Rules Flashcards
metathesis definition
re-ordering (BA–>AB)
deduplification
repeating a sequence: abcd→ababcd]
Multiple Rules
Given range of phon processes in a lang –> number of rules
general? applicable to any word, but only affect if context appropriate
some cases, more than one phon rule will apply to derivation of given word
derivation
derivation is the result after the underlying form of the morpheme has been modified by phonological process(es)
Rule Interaction
Phonological Rules INTERACT if they:
- Affect the same segment(s) in a representation
- One Rule affects segments that are part of the CONDITIONING CONTEXT of ANOTher rule
TRANSPARENT rule application
both output AND conditioning context ALWAYS observable in SURFACE REPRESENTATION
eg. YAC shows Y before A - as prod by X–>Y/_A
Example derivations show the cumulative effect of all rules on each word, as a demonstration of the analysis. - u can SEE both YES
NON-TRANSPARENT rule application
in surface representations, the FIRST RULE is NOT observed to be being FOLLOWED - LOOKS like an ABERRATION
the LATER RULE, ALTERS CONTEXT which conditions first.
ORDER of rule application = CRUCIAL
RULE ORDERING
crucial in some cases.
if apply one before another, we get the wrong surface rep.
