Week 8-9: introduction to network science Flashcards
a group of entities that are connected to each other.
network
individual entity in a network
node
he connection between nodes
link
the study of networks, specifically complex networks
network science
The main factor that caused the emergence of network science is:
the internet
basically a record of the nodes and links that form a network
network map
a network that has a structure and behavior that is neither totally predictable nor completely random
complex network
The following are three well known and commonly studied types of network:
- random network
- scale- free network
3.
network that follows a probability distribution in the number of links that each node can have
random network
a complex network. Its defining characteristic is that it has few nodes with a lot of links and lot of nodes with few links. A node with many links is called a hub
scale-free network
the statistical relationship between two quantities in which change in one quantity affects the other
power law
a network in which most nodes are not directly linked but any two nodes are connected by short paths. In order to get from one node to another that is not directly connected to travel between two unconnected nodes, you have to go through path composed of other connections
small world network
To give you a better idea, here are some of the many fields where network science is proving to be a valuable asset:
economics, sociology, public health and information and communications technology
