Week 18: climate change Flashcards
NASA defines climate change as
“a change in the typical or average weather of a region or city” or “a change in Earth’s overall climate”
The Earth’s average climate will continue to shift as long as these factors are at play:
- Energy output of the sun
- Earth’s orbit
- Earth’s axis
- Plate tectonics
the increase in the Earth’s overall atmospheric temperature
global warming
when more heat from the sun is retained inside the Earth’s atmosphere instead of being reflected back to space
greenhouse effect
gases that absorb and emit thermal radiation or heat from the sun.
greenhouse gases
The following are some of the human actions that have been proven to cause the increase in greenhouse gasses which drives global warming:
- Deforestation
- Fossil Fuels
- Overpopulation
- Agriculture
he act of removing trees from large areas of land
Deforestation
combustible (flammable) organic materials that come from the decayed remains of prehistoric plants and animals
Fossil Fuels
basically bodies of ice that are connected to land, not to be confuse with sea ice or icebergs which are floating in the ocean
land ice
Global warming affects sea level in two ways:
First, melting ice in the north and south poles add to the total amount of water in the oceans. Secondly, sea water expands as it becomes warmer.
