Critical thinking’s dictionary definition is
disciplined thinking that is clear, rational, open-minded, and informed by evidence
Critical thinking, as defined by the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking is:
the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action
What critical thinking is NOT:
Thinking a lot, being open-minded, being smart and universal skepticism
defined as an attitude of doubt
skepticism
defined as a method that aims to discover a universal truth or at least get as close to the truth as possible
socratic method
the basic flow of the Socratic Method:
- Ask a question
- Question the hypothesis
- Come up with a new hypothesis
There is also a possibility that the Socratic Method ends with all parties accepting that they do not know. This is called:
socratic ignorance
