Give a definition of culture
Culture is an integrated pattern of human behavior which includes but is not limited to, communications, languages, beliefs, values, practices, customs, rituals, roles, relationships and expected behaviours of racial, ethnic, religious, social or political group”
Define race
The term biological race is used by those who believe that “there exist natural, physical divisions among humans that are hereditary, and roughly but correctly captured by terms like Black, White, and Asian.”
Define ethnicity
A social group that shares a common and distinctive culture, language, religion, language or the like
In sociology, ethnicity is a concept referring to a shared culture and a way of life. This can be reflected in language, religion, material culture such as clothing and cuisine, and cultural products such as music and art
What is occupational choice
Occupational choice is determined by one’s values; interests and beliefs; social situation; gender; age; sexual identity; and physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities.
What is racism
Racism is an ideology that physical traits and characteristics infer personal qualities, values and worth – superiority over an inferior race
Belief that all members of each race posses characteristics, abilities or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
What is culturally effective care
Culturally effective care incorporates the philosophy of cultural competence; it also emphasizes the importance of deep reflection in practice and reflecting in action and on action.
What is antiracism
Antiracism is a powerful collection of antiracist policies that lead to racial equity and are substantiated by antiracist ideas”
Define discrimination
If prejudice is related to one’s thoughts and beliefs, discrimination is the action or behaviour associated with those beliefs. Discrimination “denies equal treatment to people because of their membership in some group” (Herbst, 1997, p. 185) and can occur at many levels including individual, institutional or organizational, and structural
Define ethnocentrism
“tendency of people to put their own group (ethnos) at the centre; to see things through the narrow lens of their own culture and use the standards of that culture to judge others”
Define stereotyping
Stereotyping occurs when one attributes certain characteristics to an entire group of people, or what Herbst defines as “an exaggerated image of their characteristics, without regard to individual attributes
Define prejudice
Prejudice has been defined as “preconceived ideas and attitudes—usually negative about a particular group of people, often without full examination of the facts”
What is the cultural iceberg
Looks at deeper factors the surface culture like food, music and fashion rather it looks at deep culture like communication styles and approaches to raising children
What is the difference between collectivist and individualistic
Collectivist - focuses on needs of group, family is primary unit, family makes decisions for children
Individualistic - Focuses on individual, children are given many options, independence
