Q

Disease, Disorder or Syndrome?

A

disease: condition which impairs normal function,
disorder: a polite word for disease or illness- usually non infectious diseases

Q

what is the viral life cycle

A

Attachment: binding between viral capsid proteins and receptors of host cell surface.
Penetration: virions enter the host cell through receptor-mediated endocytosis
Uncoating: process in which the viral capsid is removed
Replication: syntheis of viral mRNA,
Assemly: viral protein modification
Release: viruses released from host cell by lysis

Natural Antivirals

A

attachment, this is explained by the HIV inhibtitation by targeting HIB glycoproteions by using Carbohydrate-binding agents (CBAs)

Q

How does HIV work

A

HIV enters cells via an interaction of gp120 with the cellular receptor CD4 and the co-receptor CCR5 or CXCR4
insertion of gp41 into the cellular.

Q

Fungi

A

can be unicellular or multicellular
fungal cell walls contain chitin, rather than cellulose
ergosterol is a sterol found in the cell membranesof these fungi.

Plasmodium falciparum

A

causes malaria and almost every malarial death is caused by P.falciparm. treat with artemisinin derivatives which is isolated from sweet wormwood. synthesised via the mevalonate pathway.

Q

Alkylating agents

A

cancer cells generally proliferate faster and wtih reduced capacity to repair DNA damage than healthy cells.
Mustard gas derivatives:
mechlorethamine, myclophosphamide,
and chlorambucil
 Ethylenimines: thiotepa and
hexamethylmelamine
 Alkylsulfonates: busulfan
 Hydrazines and Triazines: altretamine,
procarbazine, and temozolomide
 Nitrosureas: carmustine, lomustine, and
streptozocin.
 Nitrosureas are unique because they can
cross the blood-brain barrier and are
particularly useful in treating brain tumors
 Metal salts: carboplatin, cisplatin, and
oxaliplatin

16
Q

Plant Alkaloids

A

Vinblastine : periwinkle plant
taxanes ; paclitaxel derived from pacific yew tree
these are antimicrotuble agents. microtubles are major components of cytoskeleton so the mitosis is inhibited.

17
Q

Podophyllotoxins and camptothean analogs

A

are known as topoisomerase inhibitors are used in certain chemotherapy.
torsion on double helix, topoisomerases are enzymes required to relax tension torsion in DNA
