Elaboration likelihood model
two routes to persuasion; central and peripheral. route to persuasion depends upon elaboration (motivation and ability)
Central route
- person thinks carefully about a message
- influenced by the strength/quality of the message
- stronger attitudes
- long-lasting impact on behaviour
Peripheral route
- person does not think critically about the contents of a message
- influenced by superficial cues
- weaker attitudes
- temporary impact on behaviour
Motivation to think
personal relevance. need for cognition
Ability to think
- distraction
- fatigue
- knowledge about the issue
Cognitive dissonance theory
Inconsistencies create cognitive dissonance (psychological tension), that we are motivated to reduce
Attribution
How people explain the causes of behaviour; Personal attribution and situational attribution
Fundamental attribution error
tendency to overlook situational factors and instead make internal attributions for others’ behaviour
Prejudice
negative feelings about others because of their connection to a social group
Conformity
the tendency to change our perceptions, opinions or behaviour in ways that are consistent with group norms
Obedience
behaviour change produced by the commands of authority
Compliance
changes in behaviour that are elicited by direct request
