Stress
a negative emotional experience accompanied by predictable physical, psychological, and behavioural responses, directed at alleviation or accommodation
Stressor
Stimuli that contributes towards stress
Types of stress
- Distress; Acute & chronic (has a negative effect on you)
- Eustress (has a positive effect and motivates to overcome situations and obstacles)
General adaption syndrome
- Alarm reaction stage (release of adrenaline and cortisol, fight of flight)
- resistance (body tries to counteract physiological changes)
- exhaustion (body depleted, no longer equipped to fight stress)
Physiological responses to stress
Sympathetic activation; dilates pupil, relaxes bronchi, accelerates & strengthens heartbeat, inhibits stomach and intestine activity, contracts skin vessels
Primary appraisal
focused form of social cognitive theory where specific beliefs are hypothesised to drive mood/behaviour.

- awfulising
- low-frustration tolerance
- depreciation
Secondary appraisal
Problem focused coping strategies: the goal of changing or eliminating the stressor.
Emotion focused coping strategies: 1. escape avoidance strategy; shifting attention away from stressor and toward other activities 2. seeking social support from peers
Coping strategies
- measurement / observation / record
- education about urges
- plan for dealing with lapses
- pan a mix of problem focused and support oriented coping (instrument and emotional support from friends and family)
- motivational enhancement

- Unlovability
- helplessness
- worthlessness
- negative beliefs about the world
