WEEK 5 - Learning Flashcards
Pavlovian (classical) conditioning
Understanding fear conditioning enables understanding of anxiety disorders
Extinction
fading of non-reinforced conditioned response over time. (forgetting and unlearning)
Spontaneous recovery
emergence of conditioned fear some time after successful extinction
Renewal
emergence of conditioned fear in different context after successful extinction
Reinstatement
emergence of conditioned fear after encounter of US (unconditional stimulus) alone after successful extinction
Operant conditioning
Behaviour is determined by its consequences
- behaviour increases with reinforcement
- behaviour decreases with punishment
Variables that affect the effects of consequences
- individual preferences
- state of organism; deprivation/satiation
- schedule; continuous vs partial
- size; bigger is better, quality vs quantity
- delay; immediate reward vs delayed punishment
- alternatives; do what pays best
Social learning theory
Humans are active in constructing environment. Consequences affect performance
