Power needs
Achievement - desire to excel and improve
Dominance - desire to influence and direct others
Affiliation: desire to interact socially and be accepted
Autonomy: desire for the self rather than others
Influencing Tactics
Rational persuasion - convince a reason
Inspiration appeal - appeal to emotion to build enthusiasm
Consultation - get others to participate
Integration - get someone in a good mood before making a request
Personal appeals - relationships
Exchange
Coalition tactics - get others to support your effort
Pressure
Legitimating tactics - based on authority
Humility and Hubris
Humility: the quality of being humble or having a lowly opinion of oneself opposite of pride or haughtiness
Hubris: presumption originally towards the gods, pride, excessive self confidence
Humble leadership
Willingness to admit mistakes or lack of knowledge
Tendency to share credit for success
Appreciation for others contribution
Model of humble leadership
Behaviours: admitting mistakes and limitations, modelling teachability, spotlighting follower strength and contribution
Contingencies
Leadership traits: competence and Sincerity
Context: threat or time pressure, learning culture, hierarchical adherence
