Week 7 - Overtraining + Burnout Flashcards
Define overreaching
Accumulation of training + non training stressors that result in ST decrement in perf.
Can take days-weeks to recover.
Define non-functional overreaching
Perf. ⬇️ more than 2 weeks up to a month.
Define overtraining
Accumulation of stresses (training + non training) that has a detrimental LT effect on perf.
Recovery period = weeks to months.
Overtraining syndrome
Prolonges NFOR/Repeated episodes
Still actively training/competing
Still motivated to carry on
Lasts 1 month to years
Burnout
No motivation to keep training or participating in sport/drop out
Exclusion diagnosis for burnout
Disease/Infection
Chronic -ive calorie balance
Vitamin/mineral deficiency
Allergies
Injuries
Signs & Symptoms of overtraining
Under perf.
⬆️ perception of effort
Frequent URTI
Muscle soreness
Loss of appetite
Sleep disturbances
⬆️ conflicts
Poor conc.
Reasons why you get more upper respiratory tract infections in overtrained athletes
Greater cortisol:testosterone
⬆️ levels of infections 1-2 weeks after intense periods of training. – Thought to be due to open window hypothesis.
What is the open window hypothesis
More airflow following periods of intense training = ⬆️ exposure to germs in env. = greater lymphocyte apoptosis = ⬇️ natural killer cell activity + ⬇️ immunoglobulin A levels.
What are the psychological tools available
POMs
TADS
DAOUDA
Compare, using POMs, difference in depression levels in healthy athletes vs overtraining syndrome athletes
Healthy - Depression hardly changes
OTS - Really increases
Compare, using POMs, difference in other levels in healthy athletes vs overtraining syndrome athletes
Healthy - Vigour + fatigue decline most
OTS - More pronounced changes in all categories
Training distress scale
Shorter version of POMs + done on a monthly basis.
DAOUDA
Daily measurement. - But asking daily could result in it being oversaturated, also could cause one to disengage w/ the process + athletes will lie, i.e to carry on training.
