Week 7 Flashcards
What is an occasion when we might speak while breathing in?
The word ‘oh’ spoken in shock.
Airstream mechanism
How the air is set into motion for speech to occur.
Pulmonic egressive
The outward flow of air from the lungs.
Pulmonic ingressive
The air flows into the body.
What are the two things you need to name when describing an airstream mechanism?
- Name the part of the body that causes the movement of air, which is called the initiator (usually the lungs).
- Describe the direction of airflow in relation to the body, which can inwards or outwards.
Non-pulmonic airstreams
Other airstreams that can be produced during speech.
Implosives
No meaningful sounds in English, but can be used to imitate sounds.
What kind of sounds does glottal ingressive airstream produce?
Implosives
How is an implosive produced? (In this case)
- Closure is made in the oral tract.
- The vocal folds vibrate while the whole larynx moves downwards.
- The oral closure is released.
- Larynx returns to normal position
Ejectives
Sounds produced on a glottalic egressive airstream
How are clicks produced?
Produced by velaric ingressive airstream.
Verlaric ingressive airstream
Responsible for the production of click sounds.
Southern and Eastern African languages.
Examples of click sounds
Blowing a kiss,
Tut your disapproval
What is the place of articulation for a click sound?
Either alveolar or dental.
What does the [k] mean in terms of describing click sounds?
The [k] reminds us about the velar closure that all clicks must have, and also tell us about the voicing and nasality of the click.
