Week 7 Flashcards
civil rights legislation that focuses on the ability of people with disabilities to function in our society without discrimination due to their disability
american’s with disabilities act of 1990
what are accessibility guidelines built on?
previously used guidelines including Uniform and ANSI standards
describe ADA regulations for parking lots.
- there needs to be at least one accessible parking space
- any parking lot with 25 or FEWER spaces, 1 must be accessible and the first one must be van accessible
- over 25 spots, the bigger the parking lot the more spaces and the more variation of spaces
there should be __ clear places for signs indicating accessibility of parking spots.
2
going from one surface to another place that’s either higher or lower
changes in level
legislation says that the steepest (slope) a ramp can be is how many degrees?
5 degrees
for every inch of a rise (amount of height) that a ramp is, we need to have how many inches of run/length?
12
if a step is 8 inches high, how many inches long must the ramp be?
96 inches
what is another way to say 5 degrees?
1/12
any time there is more than a half inch up or down there must be a what? and how many inches must the ramp be?
a curb cut, 6 inches
a pathway must be how many inches wide?
at least 36 inches wide
if a pathway is less than 60 inches wide and longer than 200 feet there has to be places where the pathway is at least how many inches wide? and why?
60 inches, so that one individual in a w/c can wait to the side while another individual in a w/c passes by.
**what is the common measurement for forward reach?
48 inches*
**what is the common measurement for side reach?
54 inches*
**what is the common measurement for width clearance?
*32 inches
ADA regulations are not for what?
private homes
- for measuring slopes/ramps
- put tool on surface and read degrees (angle of surface)
angle finder
interior doors shouldn’t be greater than how many psi?
5 psi
exterior doors don’t have an ADA spec. but usually should be no greater than how many psi?
10 psi
only for pull doors, may not “hold” measure
fish scale
why are exterior doors purposefully maintained at higher pressures?
so that doors don’t fly open if there is more pressure inside than outside; designed to stay closed so that the air pressure doesn’t change how hard or easy it is for the doors to stay open
name 4 components of a doorway to consider with regards to accessibility.
- direction of swing
- force to open door
- width clearance
- threshold (door saddle)
the threshold of a door must be less than how many inches? and why?
less than 1/2 inches otherwise it’s considered a step and needs a ramp
name 5 ways to adapt a door clearance that’s too narrow.
- rehang door to change direction of swing
- offset hinges
- remove doorstop
- transfer through doorway
- remove one or both rear wheels
