Week 6: The Sensory Systems Flashcards
Types of Receptors
Mechanoreceptors
Thermoreceptors
Noicoreceptors
Photoreceptors
Chemoreceptors
Mechanoreceptors
Detect stimuli related to touch, pressure, vibration, proprioception, hearing, equillibirium, blood pressure.
Distortion of shape of mechanoreceptor cell and plasma membrane
Thermoreceptors
Changes in temp.
Photoreceptors
Detect light on retina of eye
Noicireceptors
Pain
Chemoreceptors
Sense chemicals (taste, smell, chemicals in bodily fluids)
Cutaneous Sensor
Sensory receptor found in dermis or epidermis
Proprioceptors
Sensory receptor that responds to movement and position.
Found in muscles, tendons, skin.
Olfactory Receptors
Nasal epithelium
Olfactory cells
Bipolar neurons
Olfactory Stimuli
Volatile, water and fat soluble.
Supporting cells of the Olfactory
Columnar epithelium cells of mucous membrane
Where do impulses from the Olfactory tract go?
Temporal lobe of cerebral cortex.
Only sensory that does not go through thalamus.
Hyposmia
Reduced ability to smell.
Free nerve endings - damaged over time.
Gustatory Receptor Location
Taste buds on the tongue, soft palate and pharynx.
In elevated papillae
Salty Taste
Sodium ions through sodium channels
