Week 6-Cerebellum Flashcards
Where does the Cerebellum sit?
smaller structure sitting underneath the cerebrum
Where does the Cerebrum sit?
atop the brain stem
What are the two pieces that make up the Metencephalon?
Cerebellum + pons
What is the Tentorium Cerebelli?
a tough double layered outgrowth of dura mater
What is Ataxia?
a loss of coordination of voluntary movements such as walking or grasping
What are the Cerebellar Peduncles and how many are there?
pathways connecting the cerebellum to the rest of the brain and there is 3 of them
What happens at the Deep cerebellar nuclei?
outputs from the cerebellum first synapse here and then project to various targets in the brain, brainstem and spinal cord
What are some main points about the Cerebrocerebellum?
-found in the lateral zone
-has many 2nd & 3rd order connections to the cerebrum
-responsible for smooth, precisely executed movements
What are some main points about the Spinocerebellum?
-found in the medial zone
-receives proprioceptive inputs from the spinocerebellar pathways in the spinal cord
What is a main points about the Vestibulocerebellum?
it receives input from the vestibular system
Where are the Purkinje cells located?
Cerebellum
What do Granule cells do in relation with Purkinje cells?
increase the firing rate of Purkinje cells via their excitatory glutamatergic synapses
What is a Intention Tremor?
a coarse, low frequency tremor
What is Dysmetria?
a type of ataxia that is characterized by undershooting or overshooting an intended target with the hand, arm, leg or eye
What is Cerebellar gait ataxia?
when ataxia effects gait and the origin is cerebellar pathology
