Week 6 Flashcards
What are Amino Acids made up of?
Hydrogen
Carbon
Nitrogen
Oxygen
What is a “Primary Substance?”
Protein
All tissues of the body are build and repaired with protein. Amino acids are the building blocks and are key factors in most of the processes and functions of the body ie. the immune system, hormones, enzymes
What happens if you are lacking a specific amino acid?
Your body will break down tissues/muscles to compensate for the deficiency.
They act as a buffer for normal PH so if an imbalance there is fatigue and over acidity
Signs of Protein Def?
- Body tissues deteriorate, leading to hemorrhoids, weak muscles/nails, hair loss, lack of energy and strength
- Mental concentration and emotional stability degenerate
- Immune response suffers, leading to allergies and infections
Protein Requirements
The WHO standards are 5% of calorie intake
0.36 grams per pound of body weight
Example: 135lb person X .36 = 49 Grams
What percentage of fat makes up our diet?
30-40%
Health Organizations recommend 20%
Fat consumption benefits in TCM according to Pitchford
Supports Yin
Creates sense of security
Slowing/Grounding influence
Heaviness
- Fats build tissues
- Enhance the fluid metabolism
- Direct nutrients into the nervous system
Who should avoid excess use of fats/oils?
Overweight Slow Mentally or emotionally heavy Materialistic Overheated Damp Symptoms
Doesn’t apply to use of Omega 3’s and GLA oils
What health conditions are created from a high fat diet?
Tumors Cancer Obesity Heart Disease Diabetes Gallbladder/Liver Disorders Degenerative Conditions
Whats one of the best and most trusted oils to use?
Olive Oil
First Grade = Extra Virgin
Second Grade = Fine Virgin
Third Grade = Current Virgin
What are Essential Fatty Acids
Fat chains that human cells can’t readily synthesize but are needed for proper functioning
Two Essential Fatty Acids
- Linoleic Acid
2. Alpha-Linolenic Acid
Whats a Third Essential Fatty Acid thats usually in Excess?
Arachidonic Acid is a third FA that most people have in Excess
What are the components of Fatty Acids?
Components of fat that define their flavor, texture and melting points
All Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids
What remains a liquid even under refrigeration?
Polyunsaturates: Corn oil or Soy Oil
What begins to Solidify?
Mono Saturates: Olive Oil
Whats one of the best food sources for essential fatty acid def
Flax seed and its freshly pressed oil because they contain:
- EFA’s
- Alpha Linolenic Acid (Omega 3)
- Non- Rancid Linoleic Acid (Omega 6)
Food sources of Omega 6 and PGE2
Arachidonic Acid
Animal Meats Dairy Eggs Peanuts Nori Seaweed
Food sources of Omega 6 and PGE 1
Linoleic Acid
Nuts Seeds Grains Legumes Most Veggies/Fruits Animal Products
