Why use APA
A
- demonstrated relationally
- readers can easily cross-reference sources
- consistent and professional writing format
- when used correctly it protects you from chars of plagiarism
a collaboration between you and your sources

APA style - 3 main concerns
A
1) format of paper (how it’s laid out)
2) parenthetical citations (in-text citations)
3) reference list (new page at end of paper - includes ALL references you used in your paper)

When should you use parenthetical/ int-text citations
A
- whenever you directly quote someone else’s words
- when you are summarizing facts and ideas from another source
- whenever you paraphrase info from another source (use the ideas but change the words)

paraphrasing
A
- in-text citations for material that is parphrased (not quoted) does not include the page number.

In-text quotations (under 40 words)
A
- the author’s last name, publication year and page number (s) of quote must appear in your text

In-Text Quotations (40 or more words, Mnual, p.272)
A
- remove quotation marks and display in a freestanding double spaced block
- indent the entire block 1/2” or 1.3 cm
- end the block w/ a period and then include the parentheticl citation
