Week 5 Working Memory Flashcards
Who is Alan Baddeley
He created the first working memory theory
Model states: that it actively works to hold info to work or perform task
Working memory
A limited capacity storage system that is concerned with the manipulation of information occurring during complex cognitions
Phonological loop
Two components that hold verbal and auditory information
Phonological store: holds info for seconds
Articulatory rehearsal process: responsible for rehearsal items in phonological store
Visuospatial sketchpad
Holds visual and spatial information
- used for forming images in mind
Central executive
Pulls information from LTM and coordinates activity of phonological loop and visuospatial sketch pad “attention controller”
Episodic buffer
Can store info (extra capacity) and is connected to LTM, making interchange between working memory and LTM
Testing working memory -Logie 1990
Dual task: presenting primary/ secondary phonological or visuospatial task simultaneously.
Conclusion: different stores process different types of information.
Operation span test: present a letter then math problem then letter then have individual recall letters in order.
Conclusion: demonstrates high or low span of phonological similarity effect (confusion of letters/words that sound similar)
Testing working memory -Logie 1990
Word length effect: occurs when memory for a short list of words is better than a long list of words
Articulatory suppression: repetition of irrelevant sounds that interferes with rehearsal and decreases memory
