- Reflect on your spirituality before engaging with the person, to avoid imposing your beliefs and practices onto their spirituality. Consider how you make meaning, what you value and believe, what you hold sacred, and who you turn to for support in times of need.
- Acknowledge that the process of beginning diagnosis can stimulate the person to ask some deeper questions about life, such as “Why me?” and “Why now?”
- Be curious and help the person explore their questions, values, beliefs, and ways of making meaning, finding strength, and connect with others.
