identify the search terms to research literature
if its an academic assignment you need to look at academic literature
eg - RMIT Library, google scholar, but try to avoid a general internet search
need to read through the articles not just the title, downlaod article into a folder
come up with an essay plan
- organise thoughts and different focuses in each paper and identify the points/arguments
what is the structure of an essay
Introduction, paragraph that adresses points, then the conclusion
each paragraph should consist of:
Topic sentence
explanation
evidence
comment and link
the TEEL approach
how to write an introduction
successful
general opening sentence
background information to the topic
end with a statement of aims for the essay(restate the essay question)
how to write a boyd paragraph
need to contain group of connected sentences based on making one point
topic sentence that states the main point
explain/supporting sentences that develope the point further
evidence or example sentence
linking/concluding sentence[link to next paragraphs]
how to write a conclusion
the oppostie of the introcduction
restate the main aim
summarise key points
[do not include citations in the conclusion, as you are not introducing any new information]
state the overall position
needs to be consistent with same topic of the introduction
presentation and format
follow the font instructions
always use double spacing

cover page with request info
include the essay question on the cover page
add the reference list as its own page
citations included in the word count
why is referencing important
demonstrate your info has come from a credible source
demonstrate that you research has been done on the topic
it also avoids plagiarism
use majority update to date research
tone
formal
clear and simple
dont use jargon or things like don’t
dont include rhetorical questions
objective tone
impartial and unbiased
concise
do not use emotional language
do use personal pronouns, write in third person
dont repeat the point
adhere to word count
dont use unecessary words
how to use quotes and paraphrasing
use quotation marks
take notes of the guidlines of the referencing style
but use paraphrasing where you can paraphrasing - restate in your own words without altering meaning
including citation to acknowledge the source of information
how to paraphrase
- restructure the sentence
-reread the original sentence several times
break the idea into 2 or more sentences
