Week 5 - Heart diseases Flashcards
What is congenital heart disease?
An abnormality in the heart that develops before birth.
Name two congenital heart diseases
Pulmonary Atresia, tricuspid atresia
Tricuspid atresia - what is it, symptoms?
When the tricuspid valve doesn’t form well. Therefore blood can rush between the right atrium and ventricle.
Symptoms are problems breathing, bluish skin colour, poor feeding, extreme sleepiness
Pulmonary atresia - what is it, symptoms?
When the pulmonary valve doesn’t form well. Blood has trouble flowing to the lungs to pick up oxygen from the body.
Symptoms are problems breathing, bluish skin colour, poor feeding, extreme sleepiness
How could hypertension cause valve defects in the heart?
Excessive cardiac output puts stress on these valves, which will thicken and harden over time and be less functional.
Explain why CB can lead to heart failure and blue bloaters?
CB symptoms - mucus buildup in alveoli, pulmonary arterioles constrict, pulmonary hypertension, hypertrophy of right ventricle called cor pulmonale, blood backs up further through inferior vena cava, and fluid leaks out into body = blue bloaters.
What is hypoxic vasoconstriction and is it a good or bad thing?
When pulmonary blood vessels vasoconstrict when alveolar hypoxia is detected. Good thing to push oxygen to O2 rich alveoli. Although can lead to problems when excessive.
Cor Pulmonale signs/symptoms
Fainting during activity, chest discomfort, chest pain, swelling of feet and ankles, wheezing, coughing or phlegm production, bluish lips and fingers (cyanosis)
Which part of the heart is effected with Cor Pulmonale
Right ventricle
