Week 2 - Aging of spinal column Flashcards
When does IV disc degeneration start?
At 18-20 years.
What triggers IV disc degeneration?
Degradation of nucleus pulposus proteins which promotes lesions in the annulus fibrosis
Effect of aging on IV disc hydration?
Slower water return post-exercise.
Result of permanent NP flattening?
AF flattening.
Why does flattened AF cause pain?
Pushes pain-sensitive ligaments (posterior longitudinal)
At what age does aging of the vertebra typically start?
Aging of vertebra starts at 30-40.
What factors can affect the severity of symptoms of vertebral column aging?
weight, lifestyle, physical activity, attention to spinal curve maintenance, menopause in women, and heredity.
How does aging affect the vertebral column’s mobility and nerve space?
Osteophyte growth on vertebral bodies, reducing mobility and nerve spaces. Also disc flattening.
How does menopause affect bone mass?
Increases bone loss, especially in females post-menopause.
Result of anterior body settling in vertebrae?
Leads to kyphosis and balance loss.
Effect of lumbar curve loss with age?
Requires hip and knee flexing for mobility.
How to slow vertebral column aging?
Maintain spinal curves, stay active, and keep a normal weight.
Aging effect on bone matrix?
Reduces bone mass and matrix, worse post-menopause but limited by activity.
Changes in load distribution with aging?
Shifts posteriorly, increasing nerve irritation risk.
