What Makes Ethical Decisions
So Difficult?
People have different world views that
they bring into the decision-making
process, which causes individuals to
see and interpret situations in
different ways.
As a manager, some situations in
which any choice you make has
potentially negative as well as
potentially positive consequences!
-Our ethical decisions are founded in core
values, many of which are culturally derived.
Ethical Dillemas:
Ethical Dilemma arises in a
situation concerning right or wrong
when values are in conflict. Right
and wrong cannot be clearly
identified.
* Managers face an ethical dilemma
when they must choose between
their own interests and the
interests of someone else or some
other group.
Ethical Intensity:
Ethical Intensity:
variation in perceived ethical importance. Greater can mean greater
ambiguity about the correct action for an ethical issue or dilemma.
Six Factors Determining
Ethical Intensity
1-Magnitude of consequences
2-Probability of impact
3-Social consciousness
4-Time immediacy
5-Proximity
6-Concentration of effects
4 steps to make ethical decisions:
1- Is it the truth
2-Is it fair to all concerns
3-Will it build goodwill
4-Will it be beneficial to all involved?
Other approaches to ethical decision making:
- Would I be embarrassed if my decision became a headline? (Front page)
- Would I make the same decision if the outcome did not benefit me in the same way?
(Personal gain) - Whether or not anyone else knows—will it allow me to knave a good night’s sleep?
(Sleep test)
Courage drives ethics, what is it?
Courage means accepting
responsibility
* Courage means going against the
grain, breaking traditions, reducing
boundaries, going beyond your
comfort zone and initiating change.
* Courageous managers ask for what
they want and say what they think.
* Courage means fighting for valued
outcomes that benefit the whole.
