Week 5 Flashcards
Describe domestication:
Human select which individuals to breed for the next generation based on a trait.
Describe how directional artificial selection work
If you want to apply directional selection you truncate selection of a group allowing only a subset to contribute to the subsequent generations. This lead to a change in the population mean.
What’s heritability of a trait?
It’s the degree of response and mantainance of the trait in further generations.
What happen when you stop pressuring a population with artificial selection?
The variation tend to return to the mean beacuse recessive alleles are still present (even if hidden) in the population.
Describe convergent evolution
The independent development of similar structures in organisms that are not directly related.
Describe parallel evolution:
Shared evolutionary trajectory of closely related organisms.
Describe ecomorphological convergence:
The same morphology evolve in different species because they occupy the same ecological niches.
Describe the law of independent assortment:
Alleles at different gene locus assort indepenently of one another during the formation of gametes
