Week 1 Flashcards
What’s a character?
An observable physical feature
What’s a trait?
A particular form of a character
True-breeding traits are?
The only form presente in many generations
What’s an hybrid?
Offspring of crosses between organisms differing in one or more traits
Describe the particulate theory:
The units resposable for the inheritance of traits are present as discrete particles that occur in pairs and segregate from one another during the formation of gametes
How many units does a gamete own?
Eache gamete contain one single unit (that it is now called gene) so the resulting zygote contains two.
What’s the genome?
The genome is the totality of the genes in one organism
S is dominant over s because__?
Because the trait specified by s is not evident (it’s not expressed) when both forms are presente
Give a definition of genetics
Genetics is the study of inheritance of traits by looking at the genome
Desrcibe asexual riproduction and its benefits
Many single-celled organisms reproduce by single growth and division. Daughter cells contain identical information of the parent cell (But no 100% identical). Multicellular organism can do that to.
Its benefits are:
-Offspring are effectively clones of their parents
-Most effective way of reproduction: Fuel efficient and time efficient
What’s a drawback of asexual reproduction
That when the environment change the clones die
What are alleles?
The different form of a gene
What are homozygous?
Individues that have two copies of the same allele.
What are heterozygous?
Individuals that have two differents alleles
What’s phenotype?
The physical appearence of an organism, and it’s the result of genotype
