-patients have social identities and are affected by cultural contexts
-multiple social identities are experienced simultaneously
-clinicians have privileged and marginalized social identities that influence diagnosis and treatment
-the therapeutic relationship is a cultural context that informed by social identities of both patient and therapist
5 ways culture affects clinical reality (Castillo)
Culture based subjective experiences, culture based idioms of distress, culture based diagnoses, culture based treatment, culture based outcomes
Diversity/resiliency formula
Intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, spiritual and intersectionality
Intrapersonal
Strengths, capabilities, education attainment, past successes, wellness practices (college graduate, softball player)
Interpersonal
Availability of support from family members, friendships, social life, and community network (close relationships with siblings, parents)
Community
Affiliation with and or access to supportive, prosocial, informal and formal networks and organizations (close relationships w/ neighbors)
Spiritual
Identification with spiritual beliefs, practices and or formal religious organizations
Intersectionality
The identification of the various social identifications and individual may have, (ex: bilingual, Mexican American)

-interview, 16 questions that assess impact of culture on the individuals care, person centered approach ( use when unknown of symptoms due to cultural differences)
