week 5 Flashcards
what is the definition of cardiorespiratory endurance
definition= relates directly to lifelong health
-high percentage of children and teenagers have 1 or more risk factors for coronary heart disease.
vicious vs positive cycle ( x4 for each)
vicious:
sedentary behaviour> reduced fitness>overweight and obesity> poor health
positive:
physically active> good fitness> decrease fat and increase muscle> good health.
what is the main function of the cardiovascular system
internal transport of cells and dissolved materials
what is the heart volume change from 6 months, 2 yrs then adulthood
x2 at 6 months
x4 at 2 years
x15 at adulthood
what are the 3 x respiratory system structural changes:
1- lung growth increases 20x from birth to adulthood
2- lung growth is relative to growth in stature
3- alveoli increases by 15 x from birth to 8 years
what is the 3 x process of the respiratory system
1- transfer oxygen and carbon dioxide
2- gas transfer
3- use of oxygen in cells
what is the definition of vo2 max
the maximum amount of oxygen you can use in your body
what is economy?
lower economy means at young ages mean that children have less aerobic reserve at set speeds and their reserve increases with age.
describe anaerobic power ( x3)
1- short term bursts of energy
2- more use of anaerobic energy
3- power generated anaerobically is considerably higher.
what is relative vo2 max and absolute vo2 max and how are they both measured.
relative vo2= the amount of oxygen you inhale relative to your weight.
measured- ml per minute per kg
absolute vo2= total amount of oxygen you can breathe in
measured- litres per min
what happens when cardiovascular with ageing
- high prevalence of cv disorders
- the capabilities of the cv system decline with age
what is arteriosclerosis
- a thickening and toughening of the arterial walls
- the walls become less tolerant of sudden increase in pressure
- increase heart attack/ stroke
ageing and the respiratory system ( x2)
1- can cause airway obstruction
2- elastic tissue deteriorates throughout the body and reduces the lungs ability to deflate and inflate
what is the function of the nervous system.
direct immediate responses to stimuli by coordinating the activities of other systems
ageing and the nervous system (x5)
- blood flow to brain is decreased= fatty deposits gradually accumulate in the walls of blood vessels reducing rate of arterial blood flow ( atherosclerosis)
- response time is longer
- reaction time is longer
- number of dendrite branches decrease and interconnections decrease.
- myelin sheath detonates so slows nerve messages
