Week 4: Home Flashcards
1
Q
Osteoarthritis (General)
A
- Cartilage damaged (fibrillation)/smaller joint space/bone on bone contact.
- Cysts develop beneath bone.
- Osteophytes (bone spurs) develop on the surface.
- Ligaments inflamed and degenerate.
2
Q
Osteoarthritis (Tx)
A
- Radiography can detect it
- NSAIDS.
- Direct injection into the joint
- Arthroscopic surgery to remove damaged tissue.
- Total arthroplasty. (Hip & Knee only)
3
Q
OA (Hand)
A
- Bumps/lumps on fingers
- Crepitus (cracking and clicking)
- Bone spurs, swelling, redness, weakness.
4
Q
OA (Hand) (Tx)
A
- Anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medications
- Injecting cortisone
- Splint/Brace
- Hot/Cold Therapy
5
Q
OA (Feet)
A
- Tenderness/pain
- Warmth, joint stiffness, swelling, bone spurs, trouble walking or weight bearing
6
Q
OA Feet (Tx)
A
- Pads/arch support in shoes
- DME
- ROM Activities
7
Q
OA (Hip)
A
- Unilateral Pain (Groin/Upper leg pain)
- Lack ROM
- Spasms
- Muscle Atrophy (Abd & Ext)
8
Q
OA Hip (Tx)
A
- Exercise, can improve pain.
- Endurance exercises/HEP
- Heat, ice, ultrasound, E-stim and massage.
- Gait with DME
- Prevent contracture by avoiding prolonged inactivity.
9
Q
OA (Knee)
A
- Lack of ROM
- Spasms on hamstrings lead to Knee Flex. deformity/contracture.
- Genu valgus due to quad weakness and atrophy.
- Leg may appear larger
- Knee may lock or “give way.“
10
Q
OA Knee (Tx)
A
- Exercise for strengthening quadriceps.
- Stretching hamstrings & PROM of the patella.
- Use of heat, ice, ultrasound, E-stim and massage.
- Gait training DME
- Prevent contracture by avoiding prolonged inactivity.
11
Q
Septic Arthrities
A
- Knee joint affected/infection
- Acute tenderness/ inflammation/loss of function
- Unilateral pain
12
Q
Septic Arthrities (Tx)
A
- Porgressive HEP
- Endurance Activities
- Rest if damaged
13
Q
Hemophilic Arthritis
A
- hemarthrosis (bleeding in the joint)
- Blood in Synovial Fluid causes deterioration
- Sudden onset pain after injury
- Cyst formation in bone
- Damaged synovium
14
Q
Hemophilic Arthritis (Tx)
A
- Blood drainage
- Low impact Exercises
- Similar to other OA (Tx)
15
Q
Gout (Crystal Arthritis)
A
- Uric acid in blood creates sharp crystal shaped inside joint
- Tachycardia/fever
- Fatigue/extreme pain
